I have "free" travel insurance with a Nationwide bank account and they wanted £288 excess to cover my existing medical conditions. However when I tried Saga and Staysure both wanted over £800. You also get free breakdown insurance and you can use your debit card for free abroad

Can't help directly with this balders, as in what companies to use etc, but what I would say is if his problems are potentially quite serious, ie existing problems, don't just go for the bog standard mickey house holiday insurance, as if he does have a big problem the coverage amount won't be enough to cover him. Get proper ex-pat type insurance, obviously it will cost more but it's piece of mind, and if he does have anything 'existing' that will bump the price up too. You be be able to find a company that does say a 60 or a 90 day policy, rather than taking out a yearly one.
